  14.         <text><span class="style42"></span><span class="style12">TONGA</span><span class="style14"></span><span class="style42">Official name: </span><span class="style13">PuleΓÇÖanga FakatuΓÇÖiΓÇÖo Tonga (The Kingdom of Tonga)</span><span class="style42">Member of: </span><span class="style13">Commonwealth</span><span class="style42">Area: </span><span class="style13">780 km2 (301 sq mi)</span><span class="style42">Population: </span><span class="style13">99000 (1993 est)</span><span class="style42">Capital: </span><span class="style13">NukuΓÇÖalofa 28900 (1986 est)</span><span class="style42">Languages: </span><span class="style13">Tongan and English (both official)</span><span class="style42">Religions: </span><span class="style13">Methodist (43%; official), Roman Catholic (16%)</span><span class="style42">GOVERNMENT</span><span class="style13">Tonga is a constitutional monarchy. The King appoints a Prime Minister and other Ministers to the Privy Council, which acts as a Cabinet. The 31-member Legislative Assembly comprises the King, the Privy Council, 9 hereditary nobles (chosen by their peers) and 9 representatives of the people elected for three years by universal adult suffrage. There are no political parties.</span><span class="style42">GEOGRAPHY</span><span class="style13">The 172 Tongan islands ΓÇô 36 of which are inhabited ΓÇô comprise a low limestone chain in the east and a higher volcanic chain in the west. </span><span class="style42">Climate: </span><span class="style13">The climate is warm with heavy rainfall.</span><span class="style42">ECONOMY</span><span class="style13">Agriculture involves most Tongans. Yams, cassava and taro are grown as subsistence crops. Coconut products are the main exports. </span><span class="style42">Currency: </span><span class="style13">PaΓÇÖanga.</span><span class="style42">HISTORY</span><span class="style13">Inhabited by Polynesians for over 3000 years, Tonga has been ruled by kings since the 10th century. European intervention began when Captain Cook visited Tonga (1773ΓÇô77). Civil war in the first half of the 19th century was ended by King George Tupou I (reigned 1845ΓÇô93), who reunited Tonga, preserved its independence and gave it a modern constitution. From 1900 to 1970 Tonga was a British protectorate. Since 1987 pressure for constitutional reform has increased.</span></text>
